Match video shows what happened — not why

Most clubs have got hold of a camera in the last couple of years. Veo — which is Danish, and started in Copenhagen — has made it cheap enough that a U15 side at an ordinary club can film every match. Spiideo does the same across Scandinavia, Pixellot and Hudl elsewhere, Trace in the US. The systems differ, but the result is identical: you are holding 90 minutes of video after every match.
And then, usually, nothing happens.
The problem is not the recording. It is the 90 minutes.
You do not have time to watch the match again. Neither do the players. So the footage sits there, or it gets used to cut one goal out for Instagram.
When you finally do sit down with it, something else goes wrong: you can see what happened, but you cannot remember what you were thinking. You see the back line sitting too deep in the 23rd minute. Did you say something? Did you say it to Lucas? Was that the situation you were frustrated about afterwards, or was it a different one?
The video has the picture. You had the explanation. The two were never stored together.
What the big platforms genuinely solve
It is worth being precise about what the cameras do well, because they do it very well:
- Veo, Spiideo and Pixellot record the full pitch automatically and follow the play, with no parent standing behind a camera.
- Hudl has been the standard for organising, cutting and sharing video across many sports for years.
- Trace and its like make it easy to pull individual clips out for a single player.
What none of them can do is know what you said. The camera is forty metres away. Your voice is not on the recording, and even if it were, it would not be sorted by player.
The cheap fix: two clocks showing the same time
You do not need an analysis system to join the two. You only need both recordings to use the same time.
In practice:
- Press record on your phone when you get to the pitch. It stays in your pocket for the rest of the match.
- Mark kick-off with one tap when the referee blows. It takes two seconds and it is the whole key.
- After the match: scrub the footage to kick-off and type the time the player shows — 3:20, for instance.
Now the system knows your clock and the video's clock are forty seconds apart. Everything you said carries the video's timestamp. Scrub to the 23rd minute in Veo and you can read exactly what was said there.
It works with any platform because it never touches the video. No integration, no upload, no file to convert. Just two clocks that have come to an agreement.
What you can then use it for
Coaching meetings get shorter. Instead of scrubbing around hunting for "that situation", you jump straight to the minutes where something was actually said.
You can filter to one player. If you are speaking to Lucas on Thursday, you can read everything you said to and about him in that match — and jump to those timestamps in the footage. That is a very different conversation from "you need to scan more".
You notice your own patterns. Most coaches are taken aback by how much they say to the same three players. It is uncomfortable to see, and it is probably the most valuable thing about the exercise.
What it does not fix
It does not turn video analysis into something you suddenly have time for. It only removes the part where you were searching.
And it does not capture what you did not say out loud. If you thought something clever in the 60th minute without opening your mouth, it does not exist. Then again, most coaches talk far more than they think they do.
Where to start
Try it on one match. Record audio, mark kick-off, set the times against the video afterwards. Then spend ten minutes scrolling through. If you cannot recognise anything useful, it cost you ten minutes.
